Self Promotion

For anyone in ministry, there is a huge temptation to promote yourself and your ministry, especially in those seasons when ministry is slow and the invitations to speak or sing or serve have slowed to a trickle or perhaps stopped. There is the tendancy to send out brochures or flyers, post more on the blog, drop hints to friends and acquaintances about the ministry you are doing, hand out brochures on the street corners or find other ways of promoting our ministry.

What I believe we forget when we get in this mode is that the ministry the Lord has entrusted to us is not really OUR ministry. Nope, it isn't. It is HIS ministry. We are just a tool that He uses...and an expendable tool at that.

This is something that the Lord and I have been discussing frequently over the past year and He led me to a quote by Charles Swindoll from his book "Great Days with the Great Lives", that has been like a subtle punch in the gut to me. I shared this in my message when I spoke at the A Woman Inspired Conference in June and so some of you have heard this previously. I don't know His reason, but the Lord is prompting me to share it here at The Point. Perhaps He just wants to remind me once again that The Point Ministry is HIS, not mine. It is about bringing Him glory, not me.

Anyhooo, here is the quote:

“Humble yourself. Rather than racing into the limelight, we need to accept our role in the shadows. I’m serious here. Don’t promote yourself. Don’t push yourself to the front. Don’t drop hints. Let someone else do that. Better yet, let God do that. If you’re great, trust me, the word will get out. You’ll be found…in God’s time. If you’re necessary for the plan, God will put you in the right place at just the precise time. God’s work is not about us; it’s His production, start to finish. So back off. Let Him pull the curtains and turn on the stage lights.”

Oh, girl, HOW you have been ministering to me lately!!!! How thankful I am for you.....very blessed.

I needed to hear this as my ministry invitations have slowed to a trickle!!!! I keep thinking, "what do I need to do???? what do I need to do??" And, the Holy Spirit quietly returns with, "YOU don't need to do anything....I will bring engagements in my timing...."

THAT is so much harder to accept than "BUT, I just need to DO something...." Thank you, girl! I needed this today.

Computer update.... I thought I just lost all my Word docs. Nope. Lost EVERYTHING, including hundreds of pictures of Abigail. I am so upset. Please continue to pray for me, my friend.

We are going to Chicago on Tuesday for a family trip. I am very much looking forward to it.

Love you, friend!

Hi Leah,

I haven't read that from Chuck before. I love the part that says..."If you are necessary for the plan"....Our ministries are for His glory and what we do is supposed to be His call. Many times we get caught up in our idea of what it should look like. Thanks for the reminder. B

Leah,
This may be for someone else, butI am pretty sure that this is for me, too. :) I am very much at a place of stepping into the shadows. I'm definitely going to write this down. I am so glad you shared it. Thanks for obeying His lead. :)

Blessings,
Kimberly

I first heard this when you shared it at the conference and it cut straight to my heart. I have thought of it often since then.

Yes, perhaps you are being prompted to share it here to remind yourself, but I'm thinking it was also for me to hear... yet once again!

Thanks for such a reminder... it is not about me but ALL about HIM!

I think the common thought here is that ALL of us need to be reminded of this Truth today.
Yep. HE was prompting you.
Thanks for listening!

Yes....yes! This is a good place to stay and when we lose sight this is a reminder that needs to be posted on our walls. Yes. You are a wonderful woman of God, Leah...walking in all His ways.

Leah, this is so good and so necessary! Every single one of us is apt to put ourselves first at some time or another. I have been especially noticing my tendencies to do just that lately and have been trying to nip it in the bud when it happens!

I love the quote you had that said "God's work is not about us; it's His production, start to finish."

Love ya,

Marilyn

In terms of my speaking, I have no problem with "waiting." The writing has been another issue for me; it's taken the better part of 3 years to get past my frustration, but I'm finally there.

Alicia Chole's book "anonymous" changed my perspective about many of these issues regarding my hiddenness.

I'm trusting God with it all and enjoying the "down time" to ponder, write, and be more involved with the lives right in front of me. I happen to believe that the greatest kingdom work we will ever do will be the "one on one" relationships we have with others. I think, perhaps, those root the deepest and have the most to say about our call to servanthood.

Great post, Leah, and quote.

Thats a great quote Leah. As a worship leader I too often find myself questioning my motives.
